Our baby has the dreaded H1N1! It all started Tuesday morning. Liam woke up and I couldn't believe how hot his skin was. I took his temperature and it was 102. He was up playing and seemed to eat breakfast okay, but somehow I immediately knew it was H1N1. I called the pediatrician and they worked him in that afternoon. They told us they were completely full and that they had to call other doctors in, even the doctors that are normally off on that particular day. Grammie and I took him to the doctor and of course, he starting crying as soon as we walked in the door. He hates that place!!! They did a nasal swab on him and it immediately came back positive for Influenza A, since 97% of all Influenza A is H1N1, they are sure this is what he has.
My first question...... how in the world did my baby, who is not in daycare, get H1N1?
Answer... because it is everywhere. If he has even been to Target, he has been exposed.
Next question...... does this mean all of us will get it?
Answer....... yes, most likely!
The doctor gave us a script for Tamiflu (thankfully, since not everybody is getting Tamiflu because of the shortage) and we were off. They told us to take him directly to the car, since H1N1 is HIGHLY contagious! We came home and the rest of the evening was pretty much a nightmare. Little man was lifeless and would just stare. Very scary! The highest his temperature got was 103! It is so hard to watch your baby be sick. I feel so helpless. I just wish it would be me, instead of him. He slept in bed with us Tuesday night, even though I barely slept. He slept well and woke up Wednesday morning and was like a new child. He played and colored and ate and drank. Tamiflu is liquid gold, although it is a NIGHTMARE giving it to him. We have tried everything from giving it in a syringe, a spoon, mixed with applesauce, etc. The taste is horrendous and he screams and screams. Wednesday night he didn't sleep as well, but still in bed with us. He must have asked for mommy 1000 times, even though I was holding him. He kept asking for water, which we gave him plenty of and were quite glad he was drinking. His temperature ranged from 99 to 101 through the night. Thursday morning his temp was 97.8 and he ate a little breakfast and has been playing a little, but not as much as yesterday. I believe the Tamiflu has helped a lot! I feel so bad for the little man. I talked to the doctor again today and they told me the worst of it is in the first 3 days, so hopefully we have the worst part behind us. HOPEFULLY! I do thank everyone for their thoughts and prayers! He has been a sick little man!
My personal public service announcement:
If you or your child spikes a high fever and you notice loss of appetite the day before, immediately go to the doctor and demand they test you for Influenza. If it comes back positive for Influenza A, TRY to get Tamiflu. It really does help!

Grammie & Grandpa
I am soooo sorry that you guys had to deal with H1N1.. UH!!!! Hope that he and all of you are 100% healthy now!!!! I am terrified that my girls will get it.... what are your thoughts on the vaccine???? Miss you!! xoxo
ICK It is the most horrible thing when they are sick. I'd love to hear what the ped suggested about the vaccine now. I'm very torn about it.
When AP is sick, it always makes me think of those families who deal with very serious and long illnesses with their kids being in and out of the hospital for months or years. I always say extra prayers for those families. I cannot imagine... I know we're so blessed to have these very healthy boys!!!
I'm also getting ready to start us all on a probiotic regimen,I think... Hoping to bolster the immune systems naturally.
XOXO to Sweet Liam and hope he's feeling much better!
